A Switch to the Tivo Bolt from DirecTV

2/26/2017

I decided to start this year by ending my over ten year relationship with DirecTV.  It wasn't an easy decision, to be honest.  DirecTV has the best, most responsive, customer service of any company I have dealt with over the years.  I was having a problem with signal drop outs and they even came out rewired my house from the satellite dish to my rooms.  However, the money I was spending on internet plus DirecTV was ridiculous.   Since the only option for decent internet speeds in the area of Memphis that I live in is Comcast, I currently have no other options.  As a result, I was going to have a relationship with Comcast one way or another.

One thing that has kept me with DirecTV over the years is their NFL Sunday Ticket package.  When my favorite team, the Dallas Cowboys, was having bad seasons, it was the only way to watch their games.  However, I dumped the package this year in a gamble that I would get to see almost all of their games on network TV.  The gamble paid off and I saw every game this year.   Without Sunday Ticket, my reasoning for sticking with DirecTV essentially ended.  Sure, I watched a lot more NFL games when I had the package, but in reality, I was just wasting time in front of the TV that I could have been spending doing other things.

Enter the Tivo Bolt

The reason I decided to go with Tivo rather than going with my cable service box was really just so I could add more Tivo boxes in other rooms for a one time cost of about $150 each rather than paying Comcast rental fees and all of the other costs that they tack on for each device each month.  I also chose a Tivo Bolt box that has an over-the-air tuner and the ability to work with a cable card.  This gives me flexibility to dump Comcast cable TV down the road if a cord-cutter service gets decent enough for me to go that route.

Note:  I get paid commissions for purchases made through any links to Amazon products in this post.

I tried the DirecTV app that costs $35 a month that is on the AppleTV (they had a 3 month deal where you got an AppleTV for free), but there is no way to DVR programs and the programs I watch are not available on demand.  This makes the service fairly useless for my needs since I prefer being able to watch shows on my schedule rather than being required to be in front of the TV when my favorite shows are on.  I know Playstation's service has some DVR capabilities, but when you add up the difference between my internet costs plus cable TV, the money saved by going with one of the internet TV services is close to a wash.  Maybe when more high speed internet options get to this area, I can reevaluate, but for now, it seems like Comcast is the best option for me.  The beauty of the Bolt is that if I go with one of the streaming services down the road or go with another internet service, I can still use the Bolt for local network programming since it has an over the air tuner.    One thing I found out is that our network TV is not locally owned, which means that they may never be available on one of the cord cutter streaming services.

DirecTV Genie vs the Bolt

To be honest, the Genie was ingrained into how we watch TV.  It is going to take a while to become as accustomed to using the Tivo Bolt.  I do like the fact that it has some of the other services we use built into the Tivo guide (Vudu, Amazon, Youtube, Plex, etc.).   This makes it easier for anyone to access those services without needing my main remote that controls my receiver, TV or my streaming boxes.   If someone wants to look at Youtube it is as easy as hitting the Tivo button on one of our Tivo remotes and going to "Find TV, Movies, & Videos".    Another cool feature is the "What to watch now" section.  This lets you find programming by "Popular TV," "Sports", "Movies", or "Kids."   It is faster than flipping through the guide.   I will say that one disappointment was that HBO GO is built into the guide, but they won't activate it with a Comcast subscription.  It isn't a major issue since you can watch HBO shows on-demand, but I still would have preferred having the service available.  The interesting thing is that main 2 apps that aren't on the AppleTV are Amazon and Vudu, but they are both on the Tivo.

While my preferred method for listening to music is Apple Music and iTunes, I do like the ability to pull up Plex on the Tivo to access my music collection.  In other words, the Tivo has a lot of features built in that could replace many of the media streaming devices out there.   The Genie also had some media streaming services, but I always found it to be too slow or limited to bother with.

The other killer feature of the Bolt is the ability to easily skip commercials in some network TV programming by hitting one button rather than using the 30 second skip until you get back to your program, which often ends up with going to far and needing to rewind back to get back to when the show started.  Hitting one button when the commercial starts that takes you to the next segment of the show is obviously a preferred method.

The Tivo service doesn't have a huge advantage over Directv's guide like it used to, but it is still ahead in a lot of ways.  The "thumbs up" and "thumbs down" options give Tivo an idea of what you like to watch and it can suggest or even record shows automatically that it thinks you will like.  I turned off the "auto-record" feature, but I still like to look at the suggestions to see if there is something they recommend that I haven't run across yet.

The Setup

I just wanted to mention that Comcast is so much easier to deal with these days than they have been in the past.  I went down to the local Comcast office and got a cable card to use with my Tivo.  Then I called them during the Tivo setup for them to activate the card and it took all of 5 minutes.  I ended up having an issue, so I called them back.  They solved the problem in minutes and I was up and running.

I also bought a Tivo Mini (limited to a max resolution of 1080p) for the bedroom.  I activated it with Tivo online and it connected to my Bolt in the living room and gave me access to all of my recorded shows.  I did have to activate Youtube, Vudu, etc. on the individual box, but it works like a champ.  I may get another one for my office since they are a one time fee of ~ $150 and you don't have to pay Tivo or Comcast anything extra after that since they are simply an extension of your Bolt.

Other Features

I should mention that Tivo also has an app.  I haven't used it a lot, so I still have to mess around with it.   However, streaming is kind of a pain over cellular if you are using an iPhone:

"IMPORTANT iOS information:  Cellular restrictions require that streaming a show without downloading requires that your iOS device is connected to a high-speed wireless network. Existing recordings on your TiVo will start downloading to your device from the beginning of the recording. For in progress live TV, the TiVo will create a recording on the DVR and then begin downloading to the device from the beginning of that recording. Once the download has started you can start watching the show up to the point that has been downloaded to the device.  In the case of a low quality cellular connection you may want to wait until a portion of the show has been downloaded before starting to watch that download to minimize interruptions (i.e., “catching up”). In the case of a high-quality cellular connection it is possible to download fast enough to watch the show immediately without interruption."

The DIrectTV Now app  will stream over cellular without a problem.  The other upside to DirectTV Now is that if you are on AT&T, they won't even charge you for cellular use.  However, I don't use cellular for streaming enough to make it worthwhile to pay $35 a month for the privilege and their lack of DVR abilities means I can't use it in place of Comcast.

The 4k capabilities of the Bolt could also be a nice benefit.  According to Tivo, it is available on Netflix (for an extra fee) and Youtube.  Would be nice to seem them eventually add Amazon to this category since there is plenty of 4k programming with the standard Prime membership.

The Wrap up

The move from DirecTV to another service was not an easy decision.  However, when I started looking at the monthly costs, it just didn't make sense to continue using the service after I dropped NFL Sunday Ticket.   Comcast has "double play" deals that make it beneficial to package the internet with their TV programming, so there wasn't a huge increase in the monthly cost for their internet plus one of the TV packages.   I was skeptical about using Comcast's boxes, but since I was able to find a Tivo that worked with their service, I was confident that I would be happy with it once I got used to using the new box.  I have had Tivo for about a month now, and while we still have to search around to find channels that we were used to on DirecTV, we are pretty happy with the service.

Note:  I get paid commissions for purchases made through any links to Amazon products in this post.

The main downside to the Tivo is the upfront costs.  I bought the Bolt for $228 before Christmas, but I don't know if you can get it for that price now (at the time of this article it costs $299, but I have linked to it so you can check the current price).  I also bought an extra remote which was another $40.   The cost of the Tivo service is $150 a year.  The Tivo Minis are around $150 each.  In other words, you need quite a bit of money up front to use Tivo rather than just using the box that your cable company provides.  Of course, when you start adding up all of you cable company's  fees and charges, you may cover the cost of the Tivo hardware quicker than you think (I will let you do the math on that). For me, it was worth the upfront cost to go with Tivo and have the ability to use the over the air tuner later if it eventually makes sense to go with one of the cord cutting services.  Of course, I will have to stay with this system a couple years to come out even on the upfront costs, but those years unfortunately pass faster than you think.   I was with Directv over 10 years, and at the end of that time, I had to send back all of the equipment I had been leasing for years.

Anyway, at the end of the day, it is saving me a lot of money every month and I get to use the great Tivo service in the process.  It seems like a "win, win" situation if you ask me.

The iPad is Dead!!???

2/7/2017

Apple announced their current earnings and the big news is that the iPad is dead.  Well, not exactly....but they said that the iPad revenues were down year over year and alarmist are saying the iPad is dead.
Picture

Be more like the Surface Pro?

The amount of people that think the iPad should be more similar to the Microsoft Surface Pro is staggering.  A day doesn't go by without some poster on some forum saying that Apple is being killed or will be killed by Microsofts Surface line up.

Let's look at the numbers:

iPad - revenue $5.533bn
Mac - revenue $7.244bn
Surface - revenue $1.32 bn

While some may argue that iPads are declining and Surface devices are climbing, they would be wrong.  The iPad and the Surface are both declining when compared to last year.   So we are saying that the iPad, with more than 4 times the revenue, should following the Surface?  This makes about as much sense as New Coke.

Touch Screen Mac is the answer?

While I have no problem with MacOS going to touchscreen at some point in the future, I don't think that the iPad should run it.  The iPad needs to stick with the shared iOS ecosystem with a few more iPad only features like split screen multitasking that it currently enjoys.  The idea that people will only buy one Swiss Army Knife that does everything, but does nothing perfect, is not the right answer for Apple.  That being said, I would love a dual boot machine that runs both operating systems.  However, that would be one very expensive device for it to make sense for Apple.

Isn't the iPad dying?

Personally, I don't think it is.  Apple sold over 13 million iPads in the last quarter.  The Mac, in comparison, sold around 5.5 million.  In other words, the iPad was more than twice as popular for purchasers as the Mac. The market is shrinking, but that is because it competes with the iPads people already own.  Since the device has only been out for about 7 years, we don't really know the how long people will hold onto them before they upgrade.   However, Apple still sells a  whole lot of iPads.

Status Quo?

I am not saying Apple should stick with the status quo.  They should work with companies like Adobe to bring mobile versions of Photoshop to the iPad with Pencil input.  That feature alone, if only on new iPads, would get a lot of people to upgrade or buy their first iPad.  It needs to be able to send audio to more than one Airplay device, like you can do with the iTunes on the Mac.   That is not to say I want it to be a Mac.  The thing I enjoy most about the iPad is that I can run most of the same apps I have on my iPhone.  It is just a better Touch environment because it is built around Touch.

Siri is one answer

The iPad needs deeper Siri integration and Apple needs a way for us to call the iPad something other than Siri.  I don't like setting all my devices off by saying "Hey Siri".   Better microphones on the iPad could mean it could be docked in a room and used similar to an Echo.  It has decent speakers already,  but being able to say "iPad, play George Michail on AppleTV or in Zone One" would give you the ability to send audio all over the house without needing a computer in the mix.    Since the iPhone is often in my pocket and iPads are typically docked until I need them, they make a better solution than the iPhone for this situation.

Apple Watch

I should easily be able to pair my Apple Watch to my iPad.  I should be able to walk in the house and tell it to pair with the iPad or even set up Geofencing so it does it automatically when I am home.

The Wrap Up

To wrap thing up, the iPad is not dead.  It simply has a lot more competition, including the iPads that people already own.  I think that Apple should add more features without sacrificing the OS to MacOS.  The reason the iPad sells as well as it does is the fact that it shares much of the same OS with one of the most popular consumer products in history (if not the most popular)....the iPhone.

Personally, I was happy to get Pencil input, but Apple needs to build on the capabilities of the Pencil by working with Adobe to make Photoshop and Illustrator mobile versions available.   Affinity (a terrific Mac photo app) showed off an iPad version of their photography application over a year ago and it still hasn't been introduced to the iPad.  Apple should contact them and see what is holding it up.  In other words, they need to reach out to companies that make popular programs that would be ideal for the iPad and see what it will take to make it happen.   I want to be able to seamlessly move from iPad to Mac and back without feeling like I am sacrificing too much.

Of course, it would have been even better if Apple still had pro apps like Aperture that would be ideal for the iPad, but short of that happening they need to reach out to companies and get things rolling.  However, I think the iPad is far from being dead.  In fact, I prefer using it over my other devices most of the time, but they need to continue to add more capabilities, without losing the simplicity of the operating system, to get me to upgrade...which is where a lot of people are right now.
