Tripp Lite Sit Stand Desktop Workstation Review

I believe that people will have different uses for the Tripp Lite Sit Stand Desktop Workstation, Height Adjustable Standing Desk, but I will point out some of the high points and also discuss how it works for my needs.

Note:  I get paid commissions for purchases made through any links to Amazon products in this post.

First off, the workstation takes up a lot of space, so make sure your desk is large enough to support it. They mention in their description that the base is 19.7 x 19.7, but when you have it folded down, the workstation takes up nearly 25 inches from end to end. That distance is expanded if you use their keyboard tray.

Personally, I don’t currently have a setup where this can stay on the desk all the time. However, if you attached your monitor(s) to the stand and did not need much table top space, you could use this permanently in your main setup (see photo below). My setup is a bit different and I don’t have the space to use this workstation in its ideal environment. However, I do have a space where on and off use of this workstation is pretty good.
Picture
I had two separate reasons I wanted this workstation. The first is that I wanted the option to stand while I was working at my computer in my office. The second is that I wanted to be able to use my wall mounted 43 inch Vizio 4k monitor (top display in photo below) in my workflow, especially for reviewing video and photos.
Picture
I recently got a 2016 MacBook Pro and one of the highlights of this laptop is being able to use the Touch Bar with apps like Photos, Photoshop, Quicktime, and Final Cut. As a result, I like to use the laptop's keyboard, soI don’t really need the keyboard attachment for my setup. However, the picture I included at the top of this review shows what the stand looks like with the keyboard attached. You only have to put in two screws to attach the keyboard tray, so it is easy to put on and take off if your needs change.

I am 6’5, so I like the fact that you can raise and lower the monitor platform very easily (you simply squeeze a handle on the right side of the stand) and put it at the exact height that you need. Even at my height, I was able to find an ideal height for the stand. Since I am also using it with a monitor that I have on the wall, I typically place the height of the stand so that my laptop display is just below the bottom of the Vizio display. It works great and once the stand is in the desired position it is very stable to work on.
Picture
As I mentioned, I use this only when I feel like standing, so when I am finished, I just fold it back down and remove it from my desk. I just keep it folded up on its side, leaning against my desk for when I want to use it. It only takes a couple minutes to get it in place or take down, so I use it often.

To wrap things up, I wanted a way to stand at my desk without changing my entire setup and this stand works great for my purposes. It has also made my Vizio monitor more useful. I bought the monitor with the idea that I could watch TV/movies on it, but this actually gives it the dual purpose of reviewing my photos and videos on a much larger screen. I know my usage is not the norm, so it is important to understand how much space this takes up on you desk, but if you want to easily move from sit to stand, this workstation may be your answer.

2016 MBP - Initial impressions

1/16/2017

Picture
I received a 2016 MBP for my birthday in December and I thought I would post some of my initial impressions:

1.  The Keyboard is not as bad as I thought it would be.  While it isn't the comfy feeling of my Das keyboard (Mechanical), it gives a nice clicky sound to let me know that I am typing.  It isn't like typing on glass, either.   Maybe I am just not that picky about keyboards, but I have zero issues typing on the MBP.  I don't love it, but I like it.

2.  #DongleLife - I would not have wanted the new MBP if it did not have thunderbolt 3 inputs.  The 15 inch MBP, that I have, has 4 of them.  The great thing about these ports is that they work with most anything if you have an adapter.  Try hooking up a USB device to an HDMI port....you can't.  However, you can use an adapter for USB or HDMI using this one port.  It is also speedy beyond belief and that will make it more useful in the future.  That being said, I wish we would have gotten and SD slot and one USB 3 slot, but I already had an multi-card reader for my CF cards, so the loss of SD wasn't a huge issue for my normal use.  The lack of one USB 3 is more of an issue, but I bought a USB-C to USB adapter and I keep it near my MBP at all times.

3.  Desktop use - I bought a Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapter so I could use the MBP with my Elgato thunderbolt dock.  It works fine and give me access to my 4k monitors or my 27 inch 2011 iMac using target display mode.  Since I just keep the adapter plugged into the old thunderbolt cable at my desk, it doesn't create any more of a problem than hooking up my old MBP.

4.  Speedy SSD - the read/write speeds on the SSD is unparalleled.

5.  TouchID - It is awesome.  It isn't just handy when you log into the MBP, either.  It can speed up some of the processes that would otherwise require you to type in a password.

6.  Siri - It is snappy and comes in handy for launching apps, checking the weather, setting reminders, listening to music, finding photos, etc.   It is very fast on the MBP, so asking for a picture of a mountain took only a second or so to pull up.

7.  Touch Bar - While I am still figuring how to get it more ingrained into my workflow, I am already using it quite a bit for toggling between tabs in Safari, adding emojis to text messages, moving through a timeline in Quicktime or Youtube, adjusting volume, sliding through photos in the Photo app, etc.  It comes in handy, but I am still not used to using it in apps like Photoshop, but I am sure that I will get the hang of it when I have more files to edit.   The good thing is that I am just now picking up Final Cut Pro X, so my initial use of the app will be with the touch bar.
Picture
8.  Light and thin - I know Apple's obsession with thin and light devices drives pros nuts.  I don't use the MBP for my profession, so I like the combination of speed and power in a light, thin body.  I spend most of my time with the MBP on the couch, so any loss in weight is great from my perspective.   I know some people say there is already the MacBook for that purpose, but I want a 15 inch screen and more power for Photoshop and (eventually) Final Cut.

9.  Bye-bye magsafe - For me, it is a much bigger deal to be able to charge the MBP from either side.  My old MBP has the Magsafe on the left, while my favorite spot on the couch has the power outlet on the right.  This means I had to have a cable across my lap.  Also, I wore out 2 separate Magsafe cables because they are fragile.   The real kicker is that I have been using laptops for many years now and I have mainly used Windows.  I have never, not even once, tripped over the power cable and dragged my laptop onto the floor.  Does that mean it will never happen?  No, but the fact that I can actually charge from the side of the computer next to the plug means it will be less likely that the power cable will get in my way.

10.  Space Gray -  I love the new look.  Yep, that is superficial, but anytime Apple adds a new color, it feels special.  I do miss my glowing Apple logo, but it is a small price to pay for the smaller footprint.

The Wrap Up

All in all, this is a huge step up from my 2011 MBP.   As I said, my main gripe is the lack of SD and a USB 3 port, but I love the versatility of the USB-C ports.  I also love the overall speed of the MBP in comparison to my old Mac.   I would still like to see Apple make a hybrid device so I can use Apple Pencil with Photoshop, but I don't need that feature enough to switch off the Mac at this point.    Right now, at least I have Astropad or my Wacom tablet if I really want Pencil access to Photoshop.  However, I find the mouse to work for my needs, even if it is not ideal.

I should mention that I am not discounting other people's complaints.  If they really need 32GB of RAM (which is a rarity), then they have the right to complain.  I just think a lot of complaining is related to specs that aren't really all that important for the way MOST people use their computers.

My 2016 Wishlist Reviewed

1/7/2017

So last year, I put together a list of stuff I would like to see Apple do over the course of the year, so I thought I would take a new look at that list and see how it turned out:

Note:  I get paid commissions for purchases made through any links to Amazon products in this post.
1.  I want to see USB-C/thunderbolt 3 on every new laptop for multiple 4K monitors.  I may* buy a new laptop in 2016, but I wouldn't consider a machine without this port (multiple USB-C/thunderbolt ports would be preferable).

*Note:  I was all set to get a new laptop because I was having major issues with my 2011 MBP.  However, Apple fixed my problems for free, so I am not as desperate.

Well, Apple updated the MBP this year with USB-C/thunderbolt 3 ports.  I probably should have asked that they keep one SD card slot and one USB 3 slot, but the USB-C ports will make the 2016 MBP somewhat future proof since thunderbolt 3 is so ridiculously robust.  While I said "every laptop" in my wishlist, I was mainly referring to the MBP, so I am happy.

2.  Major overhaul to Airplay on iOS (with backward support) - I hear rumors that Apple is going to add Hi Res audio support in 2016.  Alongside this feature, they need a new Airport Express and iOS multi-room support.  Actually, iOS already supports multiroom, they just need to add it to the operating system so multiple speakers can be chosen in the Control Center.

Unfortunatley, this did not happen for some uinknown reason.  Apple has pretty much disassembled their Airport Extreme/Express group, so I have less optimism about Airplay for audio than ever, but they could still expand it into new areas like an Echo like device that has Siri inside.

3.  AppleTV 4 updates - Apple really needs to allow Siri control of the AppleTV from iOS or WatchOS.  Also, they need to bring back the Podcast app.  One of the main reason I own Apple products is because of the ecosystem.  They need to fully exploit the ability to tie everything together.

Podcast app is back and AppleTV's Remote app has added Siri.  It still isn't on WatchOS, but honestly that isn't a big deal.

4.  Apple Watch/WatchOS needs more work -  For example, a functional AirPlay button in "Glances" would be nice.   Also, the Apple Remote app for your iTunes library doesn't have enough features and, once again, where is the Podcast app?  It would also be nice to see a faster, thinner version, with better battery life and GPS.

They did make some great updates to the WatchOS.  They provided a major overhaul that made the Apple Watch feel new.  The overhaul made Glances disappear and it was replaced by a feature that docks and updates your most used apps.  I would still like third party access to Airplay, but it is easy to open "Music", select Airplay device, then switch over to Overcast or Downcast and have audio come from the Airplay speaker.  Since apps launch so much faster now, it is much less of an inconvenience.

There is still no Apple Podcast app, which I still haven't figured out why.  However, they did introduce a couple new Apple Watches.  They aren't thinner, but one of them did add GPS and water resistance for swimming.

5.  iPad Air 3 that works with the Apple Pencil.  I think the iPad Pro may* be too big to use as my main tablet, but a 9.7 inch iPad that works with the pencil would be great!  Also, a keyboard cover would be fantastic.  In other words, Pro options in a smaller iPad.

They introduced the IPad Pro 9.7 inch wIth Pencil support.  So I was able to check this off my list.  They still need a way to run Photoshop on the iPad to make up for the lack of a touch screen on MacOS.  However, apps like Astropad at least help bridge that divide right now.

6.  Canon Full Frame mirrorless camera that competes with Sony.  Man, I love the A7 RII, but it would be a pain to have to use an adapter ( to get access to more lenses) and convert to a new system.  However, the Sony is so drool-worthy, I have thought about it more than once.  Canon really needs to get in gear and give people what they want before it is more painful to stay with them than to leave.

Canon introduced another DSLR.  Unfortunately, they still haven't jumped onto the mirrorless bandwagon.  I am still using my MarkIII, but wished it was smaller and lighter and recorded 4k.  That being said, I often use my iPhone for 4k video and it does an ample job.   If I ever start recoring more videos for YouTube, I may add a 4k video camera since prices are dropping.  I am still hoiding out hope that Canon comes out with a Sony competitor at some point.

7.  Apple Music Casting support - they have put Apple Music on Android and Sonos.  They need to add (Chrome) Casting, which is similar to Sonos, but cheaper and will eventually support Hi Res and multiroom playback ( if it isn't supporting these features yet).

Apple has not added Casting.  It is a bit ridiculous, but it still gives iOS a distinct advantage for wireless audio and Airplay.

8.  Hybrid iOS/OS X device.  I have written about this in the past and I would preorder this type of combo device if Apple just made it available. I won't be holding my breath, though.  There may be a better chance of getting that hovercraft I mentioned earlier.

Nope, did not happen. :(. I still dream of a day where I can carry a device that runs both MacOS and iOS and has the form factor of an iPad Pro with keyboard.  Maybe one day!

9.  Apple mirrorless camera - can you imagine what would happen if you took Apple's software and combined it with DSLR removable lenses?   If they teamed up with Canon, they would have access to affordable lenses and combined with their tech, it could be the most "magical" camera in the history of the world.

Did not happen.  I still think it would be a great idea, but Apple can't even manage updating their desktop Macs, so I am not expecting much to happen here, either.

10.  Affordable 4K projectors with HDR - the way prices are falling on 4K TVs, I am hoping this finds its way to the projector market.  Let's be honest, you need a huge screen to take advantages of the extra resolution of 4K in most living rooms.  Right now, we are still using a 100 inch tripod screen with our 1080p Epson, but I would have a screen mounted if a decent $1000 4K projector made its way to the market.

I reviewed the Epson "Faux K" machine last month.  It fills in the gap, but it still isn't anywhere close to the $1000 mark I was hoping for.  However, time always solves these issues, so maybe we will see this come true by the end of 2017?
