Epson Home Cinema 5040UB Review

12/17/2016

Epson Home Cinema 5040UB 3LCD Home Theater Projector with 4K Enhancement, HDR and Wide Color Gamut is a feature packed projector in a very competitive price range.

Initial impressions

I have an Epson 1080p (2040) projector (currently priced at around $650 and reviewed here), so I was expecting something similar when I opened the box for the 5040UB (~$2799).  However, I was surprised that this projector was HUGE in comparison.  We get the projector out for game night or movie night, so I had a projector stand for the 2040.  However, the stand is dwarfed by the 5040ub.  That being said, I have managed to get it balanced on that stand for now, but I will be looking for something bigger in the near future.  Most of this review will be comparing the two projectors, but I realize that they are currently at vastly different price points.  However, in this case, both are well priced given their features.

The Setup

I have a 16:9, 100 inch projection screen that is on a tripod and I set it up about ten feet from the 5040ub which is about as close to this size screen as you can get.   As I mentioned, we put the projector on a stand and then fine tune the setup.

My old projector had feet you would use to manually put the projector at the right height, you would use the vertical and horizontal shift features to get the picture on the center of the screen, if you weren't in the perfect spot.  It was a hit and miss process that takes some time to get right because the picture can get distorted in the process.  The old projector also has a manual lever for adjusting focus.

In comparison, the 5040ub has something called "lens shift".  Instead of messing with adjustable feet and these picture bending features, you can simply use lens shift to put the picture, without distortion, in the middle of the screen (assuming you are somewhat close to center).  Of course, this projector has keystone features, but they aren't as necessary if you are slightly off center.   The focus is also fine tuned with the push of a remote control button. In comparison to the 2040, it is a pleasure to setup.

Inputs

The Epson has several different inputs.   They include HDMI (HDCP 2.2), HDMI (HDCP 1.4), USB x 2 (service only), mini USB (service only), LAN (RJ45), Computer/D-sub 15 pin, and RS-232c.  There is also a trigger out.

For my purposes, I will mainly use the HDMI (HDCP 2.2) port since it has the most capabilities and I am feeding it from a receiver that does all of the switching between my devices.
Picture

"Faux-k"

Now that I had it setup, I was ready to check out the picture.  It should be mentioned that this projector can accept a 4k input, but it uses "pixel shifting" (described by Epson as " shifts each pixel diagonally by 0.5 pixels to double the resolution to 3840 x 2160 and surpass Full HD image quality").  In short, this is not a true 4k signal.

That being said, the picture quality is excellent.  I used Sound and Vision's recommended settings as a default and then tweak it slightly depending on the show I am watching or the lighting in the room.  Another very useful feature is that you can save all of your settings in memory and name them accordingly.  This can give you game modes, movie modes, etc. that can be recalled at the touch of a button.    While I am on the subject, the remote is backlit with big, intuitive buttons.

My 2040 has a bright picture and I can watch it with ambient light in the room without a problem.  The 5040ub improves on the 2040's 2200 lumens with 2500 lumens of color and white brightness.  The 5040ub also uses expansive color gamut that displays the entire sRGB and DCI color spaces.  It has a 1,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio.  In comparison, the 2040 has a 35,000:1 contrast ratio.  What this means is that it is a better looking picture no matter what you are feeding it.

I want to mention one other thing about "faux k" related to how I am using the projector.  I am not using it for demonstrating spreadsheets or showing complex graphics, so that may be an entirely different issue.  I am using it for movies and video and it looks spectacular for that purpose.

HDR??

I have an Nvidia Shield.  I tried to get a 4k, HDR signal from Vudu's UHD video  with Dolby Vision and was not successful.  There are some HDR modes that can change the picture dramatically, but when I would look at the signal input, it was not showing an HDR signal.

I did some research on this issue and it appears to be common.  Apparently, some of the stand alone UHD players will send it an HDR signal, but I was unsuccessful with my source.  I should mention that my receiver is a Denon X4200W.  It is HDR compatible, but the technology itself is different from device to device, so my results are not unusual.

In any event, I watched "The Grand Tour"  on Amazon Prime and the picture quality was simply awesome.  I am not sure I could tell the difference between true 4k and "enhanced" 4k if it were fed the same signal.  I have a 4k TV and the picture quality seems about the same when you get inside the recommend viewing distance.  I also pulled up a 4k nature video on Youtube, and once again, the picture was amazing.

3D

I was pretty happy with the 3D picture on my 2040 and the same can be said of the 3D picture on the 5040ub.  I tried out a few NASA 3D videos and Toy Story in 3D and the picture was bright and impressive.  The extra brightness and wider color gamut of the 5040ub made Andy and crew sem like they were right in the room.

As with my 2040 projector, the 5040ub can get louder when you use settings like "Bright Cinema" or "Dynamic"/ "Dynamic 3D".  I think it is still a bit quieter than the 2040, though.  Personally, I get used to it after while, but if you are bothered by fan noise, you will be better off watching in one of the other modes with less ambient lighting.

I also tried the 2D-3D feature.  It is more convincing in this mode than the 2040, but it still isn't my cup of tea.

Gaming

I am not a big gamer, but the 2040 was very impressive in this area with 25 milliseconds of input lag.   According to other articles, the fastest input lag with 4k enhancement on is 28ms.  Not quite as fast as the 2040, but it is doing a lot of extra processing on the fly.

According to Rtings.com, most people will not notice input lag below 40ms.  In other words, both of these projectors are very good in this area.

Internet connections

For this review, I decided to hook the Epson up to the internet via its LAN port.  I connected it via their iOS app to my iPhone.  It has some convenient features that allow you to put photos on you iPhone up on the screen, it also has an internet browser, and a few other features.  I am not a fan of the scaling and I would use a Chromecast or AppleTV for this purpose.

The Wrap Up

The Epson has a great looking picture, is easy to setup, and is decent for gaming.  All in all, it is a pretty impressive package.

Yamaha WXC-50 - A Very Special Audio Device

First Impressions

When I first unboxed the Yamaha WXC-50 (~$350), I was impressed by the looks of the device right out of the box.  It is compact so it can fit in tight spaces, but the solid metal body with aluminum cover looks first class.  However, I wasn't impressed that Yamaha chose not to include any audio cables with the setup.  I realize that there are tons of ways you can use this device, but at minimum, they could have included analog RCA cables.  Instead of being able to use this out of the box, I was digging through drawers searching for cables.

Note:  I get paid commissions for purchases made through any links to Amazon products in this post.

Despite the small size, which can be placed horizontally or vertically, theWXC-50 packs in a lot of features.  It works with DLNA, Airplay, Bluetooth, has an optical input, and a standard aux input.   It has digital outputs, a trigger in/out, and a subwoofer out if you want to use it with powered speakers.,  Its uses capable ESS DACs and the WXC-50 can handle hi resolution files, including DSD (up to 5.6 Mhz) and FLAC files up to 24/192.

The Yamaha MusicCast app give you complete control over the extensive features.  You can also tweak sound quality, access your server, access internet radio, access Pandora, etc., with the app.

The device also comes with its own small remote.  It can select the different inputs, access favorited internet stations with 6 presets, and pause, play, skip and go back to prior songs.  The remote will even allow you to pause an Airplay signal or skip the song even though it is being served music from the iPhone.
Picture

All the Wonderful Things

I have tested Pandora, playing DSD files, playing 24/96 and 24/192 files, Airplay features,  Bluetooth (both as a receiver and a transmitter) the optical input, the USB input, sent it an analog signal, and used the internet radio features.  If you are using the pre-amp outputs everything works great with any signal.   However, I should mention that that I was unable to get DSD audio from the Aux outputs (separate section from the pre-amp outs).   Also, the Bluetooth transmitter seems slow to find devices.   I was unable to get it to send a Bluetooth audio signal to my Echo Dot.  It was able to find my Bluetooth Denon receiver and send audio to it.  I also tried it with my Parrot Zik 2.0 headphones and those worked without a problem, as well.   The issue with the Dot could be that it does not have the required specs to work with the WCX-50 or the Dot has an issue on its end, so I would not read a whole lot into that issue unless you are buying this specifically to send the Dot a Bluetooth signal.

Speaking of Bluetooth transmitting, it does not work with all audio.  I could get it to play music on my Denon receiver when I would send it 24/192 files from my server, but it could not handle DSD.  It worked with internet radio, but it would not send out an Airplay signal.   It also worked with the optical digital input and the analog input.  However, there is a lag between the main speakers and the Bluetooth receiver, so I would not recommend this as a whole home solution.  I would pick which device you want to listen to music on and mute the other device.  I should mention that Yamaha has many MusicCast devices and speakers and I would guess that they would handle the lag better, but I do not own any other MusicCast devices, so I can't comment on how they would work together.
Picture

How I Use It

The way I am using the WCX-50 is to feed a Little Dot MKIII Headphone amp (see above) via the pre-amp outs and I am also using it with a Marantz vintage receiver via the slightly more limited aux output.  I have the Marantz hooked up to an iHome plug so that I can turn it on and off by voice using Siri orAlexa/Echo.

Note:  I get paid commissions for purchases made through any links to Amazon products in this post.

One of my favorite ways to use it with the Marantz is to tell the Alexa to send music to the WCX-50 (which pairs fine with the Echo Dot for receiving Bluetooth audio) and then telling it to turn on the Marantz and play music.  I can do all of this from the couch via voice.  I have my extensive music library on Amazon's servers, so I can listen to most of my favorite music that way.

For more serious listening, I use the Little Dot MKIII with a pair ofHiFiMan headphones and the sound quality from the WXC-50 is outstanding.  Even when using Bluetooth as a source, its EQ capabilities, like advanced Bass Extension and Compressed Music Enhancer,  make it sound very good.

In the picture above, you will also notice that I also have a Little Dot DAC1.  I haven't removed it from the setup because I bought the amp and DAC together, but the Little Dot DAC1 will also take a USB feed from my iPhone via the Camera Connection Kit (USB3.0 to Lightning cable) and send the digital signal out via analog (using the DAC).  To get that benefit, I have the Little Dot DAC1 feeding the analog inputs on the WXC-50, so it all works great together.  Honestly, I could live with Airplay rather than a direct connection, but this just gives me a bit more flexibility if I am having home network issues.

A Quick Look at My Living Room

The picture above was taken before I put this setup together, but I wanted to show it because it gives you an idea of how it works in my setup.  The red chair is where I listen to a lot of music.  I have the WXC-50/Little Dot on the shelf next to it, so I can lean back in my "stressless" chair and have music fed right into my soul.  The Marantz, which is on the top shelf is hooked up to some vintage Pinnacle speakers and is also getting an audio signal from the WXC-50.  Finally, my main setup, with Monitor Audio speakers can be paired via Bluetooth and receive an audio signal from the WXC-50.  All in all, it gives me a lot different ways to appreciate all of the WXC-50 features.

The Wrap Up

To wrap up, I was using an Airport Express in this setup in the past and it worked fine, but the WXC-50 looks better,  sounds better, has many more audiophile features without shorting you on convenient features for when you just want background music.   When you consider that stand-alone DACS can be priced in the same range, the WCX-50 is a bargain.   All in all, this is a special audio device that has so many features that it would please almost any music fan.  I know that I am very pleased with it!!!

Top Ten Tech 2016

12/3/2016

As in past years (2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, 2011), I am putting together a new list of my top ten tech.   The list will contain my favorite things from the last year, even if they were available in prior years.  By "tech" I am basically including any new toys, apps, etc... that I find cool and/or useful.  The prices I have in the article are the current prices, but I would expect them to fluctuate between now and the end of the year.

Note:  I get paid commissions for purchases made through any links to Amazon products in this post.

My Favorite Tech Gadget of the Year

Picture
The Amazon Echo Dot ($49.99) - This year, my choice was easy.  The price for performance is unparalleled with this device.  My preference is to be able to plug the Echo into my own speakers and the Dot is the best choice for that preference.  It can play music, easily receive a Bluetooth signal from a phone or send a Bluetooth signal to a Bluetooth receiving device, control lights, control your entertainment center, etc.  It is awesome!

Most Fun for the Family

Picture
Last year, I recommended the Epson 2040 projector, but this year, I am recommending the Epson 5040ub ($2999) for people that want something even better (I plan to review it in the couple of weeks). This projector obviously costs more than the 2040, but it has 4k enhancement, HDR and Wide Color Gamut.  It is also quite a bit larger than the 2040, but the trade offs are worth it for a projector that is better in every single way.

Most Fun for Daily Use

Picture
Last year, I had a list of my favorite cord cutting devices.  However, I have been using the Samsung UN65KS8000 65-Inch 4K Ultra HD Smart LED TV's ($1697) apps for a lot of the stuff I was using my Nvidia Shield for over the past year.  I still use my AppleTV and Nvidia Sheild to a lesser extent since they have many unique apps, but the Samsung has HBO, Vudu, Youtube, Amazon, Plex, and many other apps easily available.  The Samsung has a fantastic 4k picture that supports HDR 1000.  I preferred the non-curved TV since I hang mine on the wall.

Best Headphones for Less than $100

Picture
The HiFiMan HE-350s are occasionally available on Massdrop (you have until December 11th to order them, this time around).  I would recommend jumping on board.  They are great on their own with even an iPhone, but when paired with a tube amp, they are extraordinary....especially for $99!

Best for the Paranoid (or those that like security)

Picture
Last year, I recommended Arlo cameras and they are still awesome.  However, Ring Pro ($249) adds something new to the equation.  It simply replaces your regular doorbell and allows you to communicate with anyone at your door from your iPhone from anywhere.  It will also record motion and even ring your standard chimes when someone rings the doorbell.  The fact that it doesn't require batteries is the reason I prefer the "Pro" version to the regular Ring.

Top Receiver for the Year

Picture
I updated my living room TV to 4k this year, so I also updated my Denon AVR4311CI.  The  Denon AVRX4200W 7.2 Channel Full 4K Ultra HD AV Receiver with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi ($1099.99) was the answer to all of my needs.  It has 3 HDMI outputs (2 are independent).  This meant I could hook up a Samsung TV in the living room, a projector (also in the living room) and send a separate signal to the Onkyo receiver in my office.  It has the awesome Audyssey MultEQ XT32 built in and supports Airplay.   I am a Denon fanboy, but this is one excellent receiver with many bells and whistles and the great Denon sound quality.

Note:  I get paid commissions for purchases made through any links to Amazon products in this post.

Best mobile device

Picture
While there were some complaints about Apple removing the headphone jack from their iPhones, the iPhone 7 Plus is the best phone on the market.  First off, it doesn't explode...I kid..  It has two cameras (one is wide and the other is similar to a 50mm view) which makes it ridiculously versatile when you are out and about.   It is fantastic with shooting video thanks to the optical image stabilization.  It is now water resistant, has much better speakers, has a 256GB option, and with iOS10 more can be done with widgets.  I also love the jet black color and the way it feels in the hand.

Top Tablet

Picture
I am still a fan of the iPad.  The form factor that stole my heart from the Original iPad is still there...only lighter and thinner in the iPad Pro 9.7.   I still think that touch interface is best in this form factor with iOS, but I also like the way the Surface Pro works with Adobe Photoshop. However, then you have to work with a hybrid OS, which I don't find to be very appealing (even though I like the 15 inch Toshiba with touch screen that I reviewed earlier this year).  I think a better option would be a 9.7 inch iPad and a MBP that allows Pencil input with some specific apps without redesigning the entire MacOS interface around touch (which I prefer to Windows).  The thing I like about this iPad is the Pencil input.  It adds a new diminsion with apps like Astropad (see in photo above), Pixelmator, Procreate, Paper, Notes, etc.  If the Pencil worked with Lightroom, it would be perfect, but Lightroom Mobile has at least started handling RAW files, so we are moving in the right direction.  The speakers have gotten a lot better, as well.   The iPad is still the one Apple device that has almost no competition other than old iPads that hold up for years and years.

Most Addictive Tech

Picture
Hue bulbs ($69.99) are easily the most addictive tech I have added this year.  You start with one combo pack and end up adding more and more as you discover how convenient they can be.  You can have Alexa or Siri dim them, change colors, use apps to have the work with music/video, etc.  I think they work best with Alexa, but they can also be controlled with mobile devices and you can even put them on a schedule.  I have lights on the porch that come on at the same time every evening and shut off at the same time every morning.

Note:  I get paid commissions for purchases made through any links to Amazon products in this post.

Best for the Chef

Picture
I got something called a Anova Sous Vide Cooker ($149) last year and it has changed the way I cook.  It simply plugs in and you drop it in a pot, set the temp, and then put food in a zip lock bag and drop it in for a few hours at a temperature ranging from 140 to 160 or so.  A few hours later (for most food), you have perfectly done food that you can choose to sear or leave it as is.  It is easy and provides a great way to get fantastic results.   I wrote an article about it, if you are interested.

The Other Stuff

10 Cool things that did not make the top ten:

Onkyo TX-NR646 7.2-Channel Network A/V Receiver - $379

Vizio E43u-D2 - 43 inch 4k TV for less than $400.

Digi Q kit ($454.95) - Regulate the temperature for your smoker (I use it with a Big Green Egg)

Apple Watch - I still have the original, but with the newest OS, it is like having a new watch.

Das Keyboard ($179 for the soft tactile version I own)- Simply awesome!  It reminds me of the Kramer lane on the highway (Seinfeld reference).  It is a joy to use, especially in these days of low travel keyboards.

Google On Hub ($144) - So many people have wifi issues and need a better router.  This router is easy to setup and has awesome coverage with its thirteen antennas.  I have had it for over a year, but it gets better all the time.  It can now tie into IFTT, so you can have it send you a notification when someone gets home or turn on lights in the house when you get home.

SitNCycle ($129)- This isn't the best workout you will ever get, but it has a small footprint (will fit in most closets), is sturdy, and does the job if you just want to burn some calories while watching TV or listening to music.  I actually have the sitNcycle Elite Low Resistance Exercise Bike from QVC, but it is currently $169.98, so it is slightly more expensive.  They look to be identical in their design (other than color).

Himalayan Salt lamp ($22.97)- We have these all over the house.  The look cool and they make a handy nightlight when paired with a connected switch.  My favorite one is the one that has a place you can warm up aromatics, but even the regular lamps have a nice warm, soothing glow.

Satechi headphone stand ($34.99) - A place you can hang your headphones, but it doubles as a USB 3.0 hub and even has its own DAC so you can plug those headphones in and get audio.

iHome SmartPlug includes Remote ($47.70) - This is a switch that can be controlled via voice by Siri or Alexa.  It also works with mobile devices and comes with its own remote control.  Works with more stuff than Wemo and isn't as buggy as my iDevices.

 The Wrap Up

There are many other tech items that look cool, but I don't own them, so I can't really give a first hand account.  The best looking tech that came out that I don't own would be the Microsoft Studio ($3999).   Actually, all of the Microsoft Surface computers look pretty awesome.   My main problem with them is that they run Windows, but that interface did get a lot better this year, so maybe that isn't as much of a sacrifice it was with Win8.
