I was recently looking into taking some Photoshop classes since my skills are fairly limited in that area.

I was planning on taking a couple online courses from our local community college at $99 per course.  There are three courses, so my plan was to take all of them over the summer.

When I went to buy a course, I noticed that there was a sample of what to expect.  To my surprise, the course, at least what they had as a sample, consisted only of pdf files.  There was no video at all.  So, I decided to look elsewhere.

I remember someone mentioning Lynda.com a while back.  I wasn't really sure what it was, but I decided to research it.  Lynda.com has over 1800 video courses available and many discuss photography, Lightroom, and Adobe Photoshop.  There are also classes on specific cameras, web design and other business related subjects.

They offer a free trial so that you can try out the service before paying.  They do require a credit card and they automatically charge you if you do not cancel before the trial is over.

Since I mainly wanted to learn Photoshop, I went ahead and subscribed to their $37.50 per month service.  It contains "exercise files" that let you follow along with the same file as the instructor.   I am not sure it is really needed, since you can just manipulate any file in a similar manner, but I will try it out and decide later.  The subscription without these files is $25 a month.  I am not sure why it costs so much more to get these files, but I think it will make it easier to remember steps if I see it and perform it on the exact same file.

When I signed up, I noticed that they had a 5+ hour course that covered my camera.  It walks you through most of the settings.   One of the things I really like is that the course is broken out into several videos based on subject matter that makes it easy to go back and review a subject later.

My favorite thing about the service is that it works on my iPad or iPhone.   I can watch the videos directly on the device or send it to my AppleTV via airplay.  I set it up to automatically play the next video.  It looks great on the TV and it will just continue to play the next subject without any  manual intervention.  My only complaint is that it won't play the video in the background on the actual iPhone/iPad.  Therefore, you can't check email or do anything else while the video is playing.  I usually just play the video on the iPad so my iPhone is still available for other uses.

The service makes it easy to find courses by subject or searching and gives you the option to add courses to playlists that you can create.   It will also keep track of the courses you have started and put a small icon that looks like an eye next to subjects you have started.

I plan to keep the service for a while.  I may eventually cut back to the $25 a month service, but I have hours and hours of courses in my playlists now and I haven't even started looking at the business courses.  Also, when you consider the bang for the buck, even a single local  online course in this area won't get close to the value.  I realize there are similar classes available for free on Youtube, but you may end up wasting a lot of time reviewing bad videos before you find something professional and useful.

If you are a photographer, I would highly recommend looking into the service.

Synology DS413j NAS

As you can tell, I have finally decided to get serious about my backups.  I subscribed to Crashplan as I described in my last post and now I have added a Synology DS413j NAS.

The NAS has 4 bays and a couple USB2 ports.  It is not the fastest NAS that Synology makes, but after some long consideration, I decided I could live with its speed.  I also considered the 1512+,  which is a lot faster, has an extra bay, and even has a port for adding more bays.  The reason I decided on the 413j was mainly the price and how I plan to use it.

If you have seen my Mac Attack page, you know that I have been considering a NAS for over a year.  The main reason I am just now adding it is because the bang for the buck isn't very high on these things.  Consider the 1512+ NAS is $799 and I could buy a Mac Mini for that money.  The 413j is quite a bit less at $379 for a diskless NAS.  Also, I bought the 413j from BHPhoto with four 3TB drives included (the NAS will accept 4 terabyte drives, but that costs quite a bit more).  They offer a significant savings if you bundle them, and it saved around $120 over buying them separate.  As a result, the diskless NAS really was around $260 assuming I would buy the discs separately anyway.

While I still thing it is a lot to pay, I have several terabytes of data, several computers, and I have files on multiple external drives that are getting harder and harder to manage as drives fill up.  I plan to take this opportunity to delete multiple versions of files and have 3 versions (one on the original drive, one as a bootable backup, and one on the NAS) onsite from now on.  As I delete data on current external drives, I will use them with Carbon Copy Cloner (on my Macs, still deciding how to backup Windows) to make bootable copies of my computers.  I admit this is probably overkill, but I think it would give me an answer for just about any issue that arises.

Right now, I am still moving data to my NAS and that will probably continue for while considering the speed.  However, I am looking forward to using some of the built in Synology apps.  I will post a review when I have had more time with it.

Make sure you take a look at my post on the DS Audio app.

CrashPlan Offsite Backup Review

For a few years, I have backed up my Win7 computer using Carbonite. However, I wanted a better solution that could handle attached drives, faster uploads, and  several computers.

The main reason I chose Crashplan+ Family Plan is because it can cover unlimited GBs on 10 computers.  This means I can backup nearly everything on all of my Mac and Windows computers.  I should mention that I am not backing movies up via Crashplan and that is mainly because I plan to use Walmart's Vudu service to put them online in a higher resolution, but I haven't got around to it yet.

One of the main issues with backup services is the amount of time that it takes to upload data via the internet.  I have more than 1.5 terabytes that I needed backed up and that can take a year or more to backup via the web.

With Crashplan+, you have the ability to use their Seed Kit to backup files quickly.  The Seed Kit costs $124.99 on top of their normal plan pricing.  They send you a terabyte drive that you can plug into numerous computers (one at a time) and run the Crashplan program to back them up.  It does some sort of encrypting and compressing, so it probably holds closer to 1.5 terabytes of your data.  Once you are done, you simply send it back in the same box using the prepaid label they provided in the package.  Be aware that if you go this route, you should not back up anything else until they have notified you that the files are finished being uploaded to their site.  The Seed drive will overwrite anything you have backed up, so make sure you decide if you want this service when you initially sign up for the Crashplan service.

With the Seed service, I was able to back up three computers and an external hard drive that contained all of my ALAC (Apple Lossless) music files and all of the photos I have taken over the last 9 or 10 years.

The other benefit is that if you have a major issue and need to restore 3.5 terabytes or less of data, you can pay $164.99 to have a drive shipped to your door.  If I needed to restore tons of data, this would beat spending months or years waiting for everything to download from the web.

Crashplan also has an iOS (iPhone) app that I have used.  It currently requires the file to be downloaded to view/play on the device, but it does work.  I would prefer being able to just stream it from the web or view the photo file without downloading it first, but it does work if you need a file from your backed up computer while you are out.

I should mention that I have read a blog that the writer discussed how Crashplan lost his entire backup by a combination of a corrupt drive and human error.  Crashplan, according to his article, says they have fixed this oversight, but I would warn against using them or any online service as your only backup.  It is best to have multiple backups.  I plan to have everything backed up on a NAS (when I get one), as well.  If you want to be really careful, Crashplan will also allow you to backup to a friend's computer.

There is a great book on the ins and outs of Crashplan if you want to read about their block-level incremental backup methods, encryption method secure keys, and more.  I have read a good deal of it and I have found it very useful in understanding the service.   You might be able to hunt down most of the information on Crashplan's website, but I got the book on my Kindle which helps with searches.

If your needs are similar to mine, I would recommend Crashplan+ Family Plan. It costs $124.99 for the Seeded backup and 13.99 a month if you pay on a monthly basis.  It is significantly cheaper if you pay for a year or more up front.  They also have cheaper options, if you only need to backup one computer.  For me, it was the perfect answer to my backup needs, but I will update if I run into any issues.
