My thoughts on the new mirrorless Sony Full Frame Cameras

Is this the end of the DSLR?  I don't think so, but the Sony a7 and a7R cameras are very exciting entries into the camera market.

I have read a lot of articles that explained why the micro four thirds, cell phone cameras, and now the new Sony cameras will be the end of the DSLR.  I personally don't think we are anywhere near that happening for a few reasons.  I have explained why full frame cameras give more flexibility and options over micro four thirds cameras, so I don't think they will have much impact on the DSLR market and the statistics seem to back that idea up.  The cell phone cameras also have a long way to go to match the quality and flexibility of the FF (full frame) DSLR.

These new Sony cameras are the closest thing to replacing the DSLR that I have seen.  Because they are mirrorless, they are smaller than your typical FF mirrored camera.  This would make them better for some uses, but worse for others.  Unfortunately, every full frame large aperture telephoto lens is large and a larger camera makes them easier to balance when you hand hold them.  I have put large Canon lenses on my Olympus EPL5 and it nearly impossible to shoot without a tripod.  Also, there are very few lenses made specifically for the Sony right now, so if you want to shoot birds (for example), you will need to use an adapter with another brand of lens.   There is a trade off for using an adapter.  While there have not been many side by side reviews for quality, the  ($400) adapters have shown to slow down autofocus.  I should mention that I love the fact that they have autofocus with the adapters, since the micro four thirds cameras don't, but that doesn't make them much better as a full time replacement for the DSLR.

While I do believe some Canon owners that shoot landscapes will be happy to buy the Sony a7r to take advantage of its 36.3 megapixels while continuing to use their Canon lenses, I don't think that the people that want to shoot birds, kids, dogs, sports, etc... would be very happy with this camera as their only camera for that purpose.

Sony's A7 (24.3 megapixel) camera is reported to have faster autofocus, but I have not heard how it works with the adapters.  The main downside is that you don't get much benefit, other than size, when compared to a DSLR.  I personally don't think camera size is that important if you will be using large lenses (especially when you have to use a clunky adapter).  The main benefit to micro four thirds is that all of their lenses are smaller than their full frame counterparts.   When I am carrying around a bag of lenses and a FF camera attached to a lens, the thing that feels heavy is the bag, not the camera.

I am not saying these cameras aren't a major break through.   I just think we are years from them being a total replacement for full frame DSLRs, assuming it ever happens.   However, I do see how these could be a great supplement to a DSLR.  As I mentioned, the a7R would be great for those shooting landscapes with adapted lenses, especially for people currently shooting Canon since they don't make a camera with 36 megapixels.  Also, because it works with many other lenses, it can be very useful for those with a collection of lenses.

I am not planning on buying this camera right now, but if I do, it would be used to replace my micro four thirds setup, not my full frame DSLR.  I mainly wanted micro four thirds for the ability to have a jacket-pocketable setup and I still think it currently fits that need better because of the many small lenses.  However, the Sony could fill it to some extent with the 40mm pancake lens (with adapter), the Sony kit lens, and a some of the Canon primes (like the 85mm, 50mm, and 35mm).  It definitely wouldn't be as flexible as m43, but I am not sure I really need the full flexibility of the m43 setup.  I am still thinking it over, so that alone, tells you the importance of these new cameras, especially the a7R.

For me, the $2500+ cost (adapter + camera) is the main sticking point (and the native lenses aren't cheap either).  Also, the shutter is supposed to be extremely loud.  I can get a lightweight, more versatile micro four thirds setup with several lenses for less money.  The upside to the Sony is better picture quality and more versatility out of my current Canon lenses.  I guess I could just add the Sony and keep the m43, but that gets harder to rationalize.  I already have a hard time deciding which camera to take on any given day.  Having two small cameras to choose from seems like overkill for my uses.

Why have a three monitor setup?

"Why have a three monitor setup?" is a question I have gotten in the past.  It does seem like overkill when you see it in the photo.

First, let me say that I did not go out of my way to put together a multiple monitor setup, but it just happened.

My setup started with one monitor and one computer.  The Asus monitor was all by itself for a while. However, we decided to put a flat screen HDTV in the living room and moved an old Sony HDTV into the bedroom.  As a result, I ended up with an extra older 42 inch HDTV that I had in the bedroom that I could sell or put in a different room.  Since I liked the idea of putting it in my office for various reasons, it found itself on my desk while I decided where to place it.  It is funny because someone has mentioned that the TV wasn't very good, but my response was that it wouldn't be in my office if it was the best TV in the house.  It was one of the first TV's that had a 1080p input via HDMI, so I am still happy with it.  Most of my movie watching takes place in my living room, so this is just a secondary setup.

During the same period, I decided I wanted a better monitor than the Asus for photography and decided to get a refurbished iMac that I could use as a monitor for a MBP via thunderbolt, but also get the full benefit of a great computer.  When I got the iMac, I decided to mount the TV over it and the three monitor setup was born.

The main reason I kept the Asus display was because it has numerous inputs, so I can use it with more than one computer.  It connects to the iMac as a monitor extension, it connects to an older Windows PC, and it connects to a Mac mini.  It is also connected to a receiver, so I can watch AppleTV or the PS3 on it.  I have an HDMI splitter, so I can watch the same video signal on the Asus or the Westinghouse HDTV.

I often use the Mac Mini for music while using the iMac for more intensive stuff.  The mini also feeds my living room setup, so I don't just use it in my office.

While the Westinghouse gets the least amount of use, I do use it for gaming and watching movies/Directv.  My chair is similar to a recliner, so I can lean back with my feet up on the desk and comfortably view it, even though it is mounted fairly high.

So, my answer to "Why have a three monitor setup?" is "Why not?" .  It gives the space a lot more functionality, allows multitasking, and saves me from taking a huge hit from selling the displays on eBay as they were replaced.  Also, why throw them out if I can still use them?

I don't always use all three monitors, but I have gotten used to having two monitors on most of the time.   I use a program called teleport to move one keyboard and mouse from one computer/monitor to another, so it makes for seamless blending of two computers or monitors.

The cluttered home office

The picture of my "home office" has gotten quite a bit of notoriety around the web.  I discuss this space at length on the Mac Attack page, but I wanted to address some of the negative comments I have seen around the web related to the space.

The negative comments I have seen are either from minimalists or from your typical jerks that feel empowered by posting anonymously on the web.   There are definitely a lot of trolls out there, however, I am going to address these comments with the idea that they are into minimalism and why I am not.

Minimalism, according to wiki is "any design or style wherein the simplest and fewest elements are used to create the maximum effect."  "Maximum effect" is in the eye of the user/viewer, but I have seen many offices based on some version of this concept in the past.  In the photos I have seen, the setting is often faked.  In other words, they hide the printer, router, cables, wires, and anything else that might take away from the concept.   If the "maximum effect" is to have an uncluttered pic, then I guess it could be considered successful.  However, for "maximum effect" in my home office (sometimes called a "man cave"), I needed more than that.

The negative comments are usually some form of the question "how can you work in an area with so much going on"?  The answer is pretty simple.  I concentrate on the task at hand.  I leave the TV off while I am working.  If I have a job to do, I don't piddle around with other things.  If I am working from home, I want to get to it and get it over with.  Have you ever read a book in the same room that you keep a TV or stereo?  Same concept.

I have also heard people say there is too much clutter to get anything done.     The photo makes the desk look like there is very little space for actual work.  In reality, there is a lot of space to work.  The desk is actually about 60 inches wide and 43 inches deep.  It leaves a ton of space for working.  While I don't work with crafts, the space is plenty for folders, paper, stapler, and the few other items I use in addition to the computer.

Picture
The picture above shows a pic of the most current setup.   While I don't keep the laptop in the room, when I work, I move it into the office since it has Win7 installed and I need it for "real" work.  The Wacom tablet is about 15 x 10.  It slides under the iMac when it isn't being used.  This, combined with the fact that one of the monitors can be swung completely off the desk, thanks to an Ergotron mount, leaves me quite a bit of space to work.  Keep in mind that the iPad isn't glued to the desk, so it can be moved. I had a roll top desk in the room before and this gives me about four times as much empty space as the roll top with nothing on it.   I don't even need that much space, but it came in handy when I ripped several of my DVDs to Vudu.

Actually, there is more empty space on this desk than the one I have at work.  At the office, I have a ten key, phone, stapler, two large monitors, a radio, a fan, papers, and a notepad on the desk, and it leaves me with a lot less space than I have here.  If you think this area is cluttered, you should visit an office where people work.
Picture
While I do have areas of the house that I can take my laptop and not have anything else around (see above), I don't really see the need for it.  I have no issues with concentrating on work in my office.

That all being said, anyone that has looked at the room can see that it isn't used just for work.  It is more of a "man cave" space where I go to edit photos, listen to music, play the occasional game, watch a program, strum a guitar, or do whatever else I want to do.  Yeah, I can do most of these things in my living room, but occasionally I like to be in my own space.  The entire space, as I have mentioned before, is based around my hobbies, especially audio.  Yeah, I do real work in there on occasion, but I refuse to let work take over space in my home.   This room was not designed around work.

The other reason I did not design the space for minimalism is because I wanted the space to have personality.  The pictures, stuffed animals, SpudTroopers, and other non-essential items in the room (some call it clutter) tell you more about me than an empty room with a laptop and a desk.   Most of the stuff is meaningful to me.  The basset hound sitting on the SACD rack reminds me of a trip to Graceland.  The signed B&W Elvis photo reminds me of the day that I met Alfred Wertheimer at the Memphis Zoo when the Panda exhibit opened.  The Hatch Show Prints remind me of a trip to Nashville to see the famous letterpress print shop.  The stuffed tigers are gifts I have received over the years.  One of them provides cushioning for my guitar.  The sterile rooms without personality are boring to me.  A robot could live in those type of spaces for all I know.

I don't spend my time commenting on sites about how these minimal setups are boring, cold, and lifeless. I don't necessarily think they look bad in photos.  However, if I want to listen to quality sound from a computer and want both speakers and headphones, I am going to need to take up space with speakers, DACs, amps, and headphones.  I suppose I could live with a pair of earbuds plugged into a laptop, like a lot of people, but that idea just doesn't inspire me.

If you are happy in an minimalist styled room, that is your business.  I just prefer a more inspiring space with personality that excels in many different areas.
