The Amazon Kindle app has been one of my favorites on my Original iPad. It has been crippled by Amazon, but it has always been great for reading books on iOS devices.
One of the missing features that Amazon chose not to include on the iPad app was the ability to read magazines. However, to my surprise, the magazine I had subscribed to on my B&W Kindle was now in living color on my iPad. In the past, magazines did not show up, so this is a very nice addition and should compliment the Apple Newsstand and Zinio magazine app that I already used for reading magazines. Actually, when my subscriptions expire, I will probably renew them with Amazon so I can read them on the Kindle or iPad.
Amazon added a lending service to their Kindles, too. This allows Prime members to borrow books for reading rather than buying them. However, they decided to only allow the feature on Amazon Kindles, so the loaned book does not show up on my iPad. I am not real happy about it since I like to read on multiple devices depending on where I am, so this missing feature is slightly problematic. However, I guess it is another way to differentiate themselves from iOS.
This lending feature is nice, but not really a game changer that would make anyone decide to pick a Kindle over an iPad. The library of loaned books is still small, but if it ever includes the entire Amazon library, it could make it worth $79 to just pick up a cheap Kindle. I think it is worthwhile to have for reading in the sun, anyway.
